Many of us look for ways to rejuvenate our appearance or find relief from the persistent discomfort of dry eye. You may want a solution that addresses concerns on the surface without a long recovery. Intense pulsed light (IPL) technology offers a gentle yet effective solution to common skin and eye conditions.

IPL is a light-based treatment that can help improve skin tone, reduce redness, and provide relief from the symptoms of dry eye disease. It works by using precise light pulses to target specific areas, helping you achieve your aesthetic and wellness goals.

What Is IPL?

IPL is a technology that uses gentle pulses of broad-spectrum light to address various skin and eye conditions. Unlike a laser, which typically uses a single wavelength, IPL uses multiple wavelengths to address more than one concern at once.

How IPL Works

You can think of IPL as a powerful camera flash. The device emits scattered wavelengths of light that target specific pigments or blockages in glands that line your eyelids. The light energy converts to heat, which helps your body clear away unwanted cells or melt blockages.

How IPL Helps Your Skin and Eyes

For skin, IPL can reduce the look of sun damage and uneven pigmentation. For the eyes, it can warm the glands that produce oils for your tears, which may relieve symptoms of dry eye. Our team of optometrists can discuss how IPL may help with your specific goals.

Key Benefits for Your Skin’s Appearance

Many people seek IPL to help improve the appearance and texture of their skin. The treatment can address several common cosmetic concerns, particularly those related to sun exposure and the aging process.

Address Sun Damage and Redness

IPL is often used to target discoloration. It can help with:

  • Freckles
  • Age spots
  • Broken blood vessels
  • General redness

Improve Skin Tone and Texture

By encouraging collagen production, the treatment can also contribute to a smoother, more even skin texture. It can help refresh the appearance of your face, neck, and hands.

IPL for Skin Tightening

While the primary purpose of IPL is to improve pigmentation and reduce redness, the gentle heat may lead to a subtle firming effect for some individuals over time, one of several methods for tightening skin without surgery.

Eye Health and Dry Eye Relief

Beyond cosmetic applications, IPL is used by eye care professionals for medical concerns. Optometrists can use it for the treatment of dry eye.

Treatment for Dry Eye Symptoms

If you experience dry, scratchy, or watery eyes, it may be due to meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). This condition occurs when the tiny glands that line your eyelids become blocked. This prevents them from releasing the oils needed for healthy tears.

How IPL Helps Meibomian Gland Dysfunction

The light pulses gently heat the eyelids. This warmth can liquefy the hardened oil that blocks the meibomian glands, making it easier to express the blockages and restore normal oil flow. Our OptiLight by Lumenis treatment is designed to help improve the quality of your tears and reduce irritation.

The IPL Treatment Process

Knowing what to expect can make the process straightforward and comfortable. It typically involves a consultation, the treatment itself, and a simple aftercare routine.

Initial Consultation

You’ll first meet with a professional to discuss your goals and review your health history. We will examine your skin or eyes to determine if you’re a good candidate for IPL, which often begins with an eye exam.

During a Session

A session is typically brief, lasting around 15–30 minutes. You’ll wear protective glasses, and a cool gel is applied to the treatment area. You’ll feel a warm sensation as the device moves across your skin.

Post-Treatment Care

After a session, your skin may feel warm and look slightly red for a few hours. It’s always important to protect your skin from the sun, but especially after you’ve received treatment. Your provider will provide you with a complete list of aftercare instructions to follow.

Your IPL Plan and Candidacy

Results from IPL appear over time and depend on your individual goals. Most people require a series of treatments to achieve their desired outcome.

Your Custom Treatment Schedule

A typical plan consists of 3–5 sessions, spaced approximately 4 weeks apart. The exact number will depend on the condition you’re treating and how your body responds.

How Long Results Last

With proper sun protection and a good skincare routine, your results can last for a year or more. Many people choose to schedule a maintenance session once or twice a year. This helps to preserve the benefits for your skin or eyes.

Candidacy for IPL

IPL works well for people with lighter skin tones because the light targets the contrast between skin and pigment. This treatment may be an option for those seeking a non-surgical approach to addressing sun damage, redness, or dry eye symptoms.
